Now that music finds itself in the middle of social media age, we see many musicians selling out and committing to trends in order to gain attention and strain for relevancy. But every now and then, it’s a breathe of fresh air to see an emcee not lose themself in the algorithm on the quest for likes. Enter Ace da Vinci w/ his latest single, “shorty.” ft. Trellzmind.
As a young nigga on the scene, I remember Ace doing his thing at Young Chicago Authors any given Tuesday night and his energy and stage presence felt so genuine. Ace was sexy, but never lewd; confident, but never cocky. It was the type of vibe that didn’t make you want to be more like him, but even more like YOU. And it’s good to know the very thing that made him so dope to me back then carries over to his latest track.
“shorty.” is a 2 min 15 sec joy ride. Short, simple, and sweet. There’s not much here in terms of lyrical acrobatics or heavy bar work, but the artist makes up for it with perfect word placement and an undeniably smooth flow as he’s coaxing the shorty he’s talking to on the track. The beat is just as simple with a classic trap bass drum, snare, and hi-hat pattern under a mellow electric key and the occasional synth flourish here and there. Not to mention the dance that comes with the track.
The shorty, as they dubbed it, is a simple dance and the brain child of the feature Trellzmind. Literally anybody can do it. Bend your knees ever so slightly and bounce lightly side to side.
