The Brooklyn-born and Chicago-based rapper Moses the Marauder is back with a short and sweet 4-pack of tracks titled Metamorphosis. March has been a jammed-packed month for this artist. I was able to catch Moses’ performance at Kenny Morningstar’s Ground Level 4 and it was terrific. Moses then went down to Texas to perform at SXSW with Columbia College Chicago’s AEMMP Records. To wrap up the month, he has two release parties scheduled for Metamorphosis in Chicago and New York this weekend. On this brief mixtape, Moses creates a vivid universe of a young man growing up in a world that is changing daily. He goes into details about how he deals with his anxieties, relationships, growing as an artist, and more. This talented lyricist has all the flair and authenticity in his raps. Not only does he come with contemplative bars and entertaining punchlines on Metamorphosis, Moses toyed around with more vocal effects to make the project feel more ethereal. On “Friday”, Moses begins with a relaxing intro about him coming into his own and new things that come with blossoming as a rapper. “Just Another Day” has that classic East coast boom-bap sound and displays Moses questioning if his passions are taking him anywhere. Moses goes on to say, “So what the f**k I’m finna do if time keeps passing by and every step I take is minuscule.” Moses the Marauder is one of my favorite up-and-coming rappers because never wastes a breath on the beat, he always relays his message within the music. On the final song “Pain”, Moses taps Songbird for a wonderful and delicate outro. The two artists take turns harmonizing and singing about the troubles they face and the vices that have a hold of them. Metamorphosis is Moses the Marauder shedding from his shell and spreading his wings. The project is a pensive and relatable listen from start to finish.
